Continuing on from wonderful collective members, Alessandra, Liana and Alison as well as Alyssa, Lizeth and Georgia, we have our last round of August music faves from our NANC gang. This time, we have:

  1. Drunk II by Mannequin Pussy

Vocalist and guitarist Marisa Dabice catalogues with fervour the momentary highs of distraction through drink and the desperate lows when the emotional agony is too overwhelming. However, the frustration of excess and anguish gives away to melancholy as Dabice contemplates the need to simply be vulnerable and open with her grief. This is the perfect post-breakup anthem.

2. Feel the BEAT by CHAI

Four-piece punk/bubblegum pop/synthwave band CHAI are all about unabashed self-affirmation! With the goal of turning the restrictive norms of kawaii on itself by recognising your complexities and flaws as your charms, Feel the BEAT continues in this vein as lead vocalist Mana describes the joyous process of building yourself back up after a period of exhaustion. The tantalising prospect of another day comes through with the playful vocal melodies and unrelenting drums. I always feel a sense of curiosity about the future when I listen to this song.

3. Uh by Kode9

The garage influences and the unexpected tempo changes, mixed with the repeated refrain of ‘uh’ makes this an immensely playful and danceable song. And those snares!

  1. Bags by Clairo

I feel like this song was specially made for those long train rides home when the sky is burnt with orange and purple and you just want the world to shut up. It feels like she’s seen the torn-up diary pages of unrequited feelings and put them into something that makes sense. What else can I say – this song immediately hit me to the core when I first heard it and my winter days has just been endlessly filled with this song.

2. Hawaiian Mazes by Banks

I’m a water sign so immediately, I was drawn by the way the production and lyrics ebbed in and out of each other like waves. Banks has been one of my favourite artists since forever and it’s really nice to see her sonically venture in a new direction. Despite the serene nature of the sound, there’s something very heartbreaking and vulnerable weaved throughout the song that keeps drawing me in like a magnet.

3. Rose Quartz by Toro y Moi

I can’t believe this song is six years old. It still feels so fresh and I just think that Chaz is one of the best musicians around. I love that his sound is never stagnant and always has my mind in motion. YouTube recently re-introduced me to this track and I’ve been replaying ever since. I always feel like I’m in a kaleidoscope when I listen to it. Not only is this song so innovatively constructed but the visual is amongst the best that I’ve ever seen.
